Choosing a Pillow for a Rental or Short-Stay Bed

What a rental bed has to put up with

The right pillow for renters is decided by how often the bed changes hands. If you are renting the place yourself, on a fixed-term lease, nobody else sleeps on it, it gets washed on your schedule and it goes in the car when you move, so buy once and buy for loft that holds. If you are the one supplying the bedding in a high-churn short-stay listing, you want medium density inside a zippered protector, in the size your pillowcases actually are, with spares in the cupboard. Those are two different purchases, and confusing them is where renters and hosts alike waste money.

Everything we fill is goose or duck down, handcrafted in South Australia, so it is worth saying plainly what we don't make: no polyester, no microfibre, no synthetic fill. If a property turns over several times a week and you want to hot-wash a pillow between every guest, a cheap washable synthetic replaced often is the honest answer, and you won't find one here. Down earns its keep on beds slept in by the same person for months, and in listings where guests notice the bedding enough to mention it.

Medium density is the crowd-pleaser default

If you can only stock one pillow for renters across every bed, make it medium or medium-firm. It is the density that neither collapses under a side sleeper nor pushes a back sleeper's chin towards their chest. Keep one firmer and one softer pillow in the linen cupboard so guests can fix the height themselves without messaging you at night.

Density comes from the amount of down used, not the type of down, which is why the densities run soft, medium, medium-firm and firm. Side sleepers have the most space to fill between ear and shoulder, so they usually want the Standard Size Firm Pillow in 90% White European Duck Down. Stomach sleepers want almost nothing under their head, which is the job of the Standard Size Soft Density Low Profile Pillow. Buying the spares with the first order saves a second delivery, and pairs such as the 2 x King Size Medium Density Pillows in 90% White Polish Goose Down exist for exactly that.

Australian and USA sizes aren't interchangeable

Buy the pillow to fit the cases you already own. If you styled the room from American inspiration, bought imported linen or installed a US-size bed, your cases may be USA Standard or USA Queen, and an Australian Standard pillow inside one sags at the ends and photographs badly from day one.

We make the sizes separately rather than hoping one fits all: Australian Standard, USA Standard, USA Queen, King, and European at 65cm square. A European case needs the European Size Pillow in 90% European Duck Down, and US-sourced linen needs the USA Standard Size Medium Density Pillow to fill it properly. The whole goose down pillow range is built that way, so measure a case before ordering rather than after, and if what you measure doesn't match any of those names, Contact Us with the measurement before you buy.

Cost per night beats the sticker price

Divide the price by the nights you will get out of it, and the expensive pillow for renters is often the cheaper one. The comparison that matters is per year of service: a budget pillow replaced often against a down pillow that keeps its loft through years of washing, fluffing and airing.

Our Mother Goose down is collected from the breast only and hand sorted so only the largest downs are individually selected, and those big clusters are what recover their shape at 900 fill power after being squashed flat all night. We suggest washing pillows every six to twelve months, and a pillow that will not come back after a wash and a day in the sun has done its time. For a budget listing at high churn, that durability is money you won't recover. For a long-stay apartment, an executive rental or a premium listing, it is the opposite.

Washing, drying and humid coastal properties

On a same-day changeover, wash the protector and the case, not the pillow. A zippered protector is what makes a fast turnover possible, and it is cheaper to replace than the pillow underneath. A down pillow needs real drying time, and one that goes back on the bed damp in a coastal or subtropical property is a mould and musty-odour complaint waiting for the next guest.

Care labelling is not a suggestion. Under the Consumer Goods (Care Labelling) Information Standard 2023, made by the Commonwealth, bedding and household textiles must carry care instructions in accordance with AS/NZS 1957:1998 or ISO 3758:2012, so the symbols sewn into the pillow are the instruction to follow. In practice that means low heat, plenty of time, dryer balls or a couple of clean tennis balls to break up the clumps, then fresh air before it goes near a bed, and our down pillow care instructions have the rest of the detail. Deep cleaning on a same-day turnover belongs at a commercial laundry, not in a domestic machine.

What do the rules say about bedding?

The minimum standards set for rooming accommodation don't list a pillow among the things an operator has to hand over. Consumer Affairs Victoria's rooming house minimum standards cover privacy, security, safety and amenity, and bedding items are not among the prescribed ones. In Queensland, the Residential Tenancies Authority's minimum housing standards apply to rooming accommodation at move-in and right through the agreement, and bedding is not on that prescribed list either. The obligations that do exist apply to bedding you have chosen to supply, and they are about cleanliness.

Where council local laws bite

Murweh Shire Council's subordinate local law for rental accommodation requires that where bedding or linen is supplied it is clean, and that linen given to a guest has been washed since its last use. That is one council's local law, with equivalent clauses in other councils' accommodation local laws, so check your own. Fill-content claims are a consumer law matter rather than a standards one: the ACCC has accepted court-enforceable undertakings from suppliers whose "100%" or "minimum 90%" down claims relied on the tolerances in AS 2479, a voluntary standard. So read the percentage printed on the product you are buying. Ours name the exact percentage, from 90% White European Duck Down through to the 95% and 98-99% Polish goose grades, and for your peace of mind we will always provide the Veterinary Health Certificates for the downs we import.

Pillows that move house with you

A pillow for renters on a long lease has an easy life next to a short-stay one, and down travels well, because it compresses down small and recovers. We would unpack it and shake it out on arrival rather than leave it compressed in a box for weeks, and the same goes for storage between leases.

The Standard Size Medium Density Pillow in 95% White Polish Goose Down at 750 fill power is the sensible middle for that. A tired rental mattress is helped more by a down mattress topper than by anything under your head, and our down quilts run 1 to 7 blanket warmth, so an unheated bedroom and a heated one don't get the same answer. Quilts, pillows and toppers are all made at Para Hills West in South Australia and posted free Australia-wide, so stocking a regional or interstate rental is no harder than an Adelaide one.

Frequently asked questions

Should I stock down pillows in a rental at all?

Usually yes, with one caveat. Some guests simply prefer not to sleep on down, so name the fill in your listing description and keep one spare of another type in the cupboard. Keeping the bedding fresh is a housekeeping matter either way: protectors, hot-washed cases, regular airing.

How many pillows does each bed size need?

Two that are actually slept on for a double, queen, king or super king, and one for a single or king single. Add roughly one spare per bed at a different density. Four to six pillows plus cushions is styling for the listing photos, and every extra one is more laundering and more storage.

Can I wash a down pillow between same-day guests?

No. Even on low heat, drying a down pillow all the way through takes hours, and a damp one invites mould. Plan around protectors and cases for same-day changeovers, and wash pillows in the gaps between bookings or through a commercial laundry.

Do you deliver to interstate and regional properties?

Yes. Delivery is free Australia-wide, and free internationally to the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Japan and Singapore, with no tariff at all for our USA customers! Everything is made in Para Hills West, South Australia.

What should I do with a pillow that has gone flat?

Wash it, dry it fully, then give it a day in fresh air and a thorough fluff. Down that has only compressed will come back. If it stays flat after that it is finished, and it is better replaced than left for a guest to describe in a review.

Match the size to your cases and the density to your sleepers, then browse the pillow range by size and density. If you're caught between two densities for a bed you can't test yourself, Contact Us and tell us the bed and the case size, and we'll point you to the right one!
