Goose down, duck down and feather compared

Goose down commands a higher price than duck down, and in our range it also reaches higher fill powers. That matters because the higher the fill power, the less down is needed for the same warmth. Duck down is generally the more affordable choice and still makes a good quilt.

Feather is a different material again, and this is where label wording matters. The down percentage tells you how much of the fill is down, so check that figure on any quilt sold simply as "goose down" before you compare prices. Our down grades and what the numbers mean

Three details describe a down grade: its down percentage, its class and its fill power. Our downs are classified as Class 1A or Class 1, with our Icelandic Eiderdown and Mother Goose downs in Class 1A. Some of our downs also carry a turbidity reading, which measures cleanliness. A reading of 1000 on our Mother Goose downs means, as we put it, "it does not get any cleaner".

Both Mother Goose grades are collected from the breast only.

Which grade should you buy?

Use the table to match a grade to what matters most to you:

• For the top grade: 98-99% White Polish Hand Select XXL Mother Goose down at 900 fill power. Hand Select Mother Goose down costs us over AU$800 per kg, not including customs and some freight costs.

• For Eiderdown: our Rated 1A Icelandic Eiderdown, which performs like a 900 fill down at approx. 700 fill power.

• For Class 1A goose down: 95% White Polish Mother Goose down, the other Mother Goose grade in our range.

• For a Class 1 goose down: 95% White Premium Polish Goose Down at 850 fill power, or 95% Polish Goose Down at 750.

• For the more affordable option: 95% European Duck down "TOP TOP" at 700 fill power.

The shell fabric

The shell is the other half of the quilt. All our fabric is supplied by Weidmann in Germany. That includes German Batiste TE270 cotton at a 380 thread count, known as "Magic Touch", and the TE100 batiste we use for quilts and pillows.

Where our Polish goose down comes from

Polish Mother Goose down is a government-regulated supply, bred under strict control of a unique reproduction system. It comes from the White Koluda Goose, developed by the National Zootechnics Institute since 1962, and the eggs must be bought from the Polish Government breeding program. None of this shows on a shop shelf, but it's worth knowing when you weigh up the best goose down quilt Australia buyers can choose from.

Polish geese are bred on family farms with average flock sizes of 3,000 to 6,000 geese, while other countries are dominated by farms with flocks more than ten times bigger. Our downs come from Animex, now Cedrob, which collects down from each part of the goose individually, so breast clusters are kept separate from the rest.

On ethics, all the down we source is a by-product of birds raised for meat. Certifications such as the Responsible Down Standard and Downpass exist to show that down was sourced ethically.

Label claims and paperwork worth checking

• Down content: AS 2479-2007, published by Standards Australia, sets requirements for the purity, composition, classification and labelling of down and/or feather filling in products such as quilts and pillows. The ACCC has taken enforcement action against quilt suppliers whose products did not match their labelled down percentage, and those suppliers stopped the claims, as its media release on the quilt suppliers reports.

• Where it was made: Under the Australian Consumer Law, the ACCC explains that an "Australian Made" claim must satisfy a safe-harbour test, meaning the product was substantially transformed in Australia. Ask where the quilt itself was made, not just where the business is based.

• Biosecurity treatment: The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry requires imported feathers and down to be treated by an approved biosecurity method, and it publishes industry advice on the approved biosecurity methods for treating feathers and down. The conditions for each import are set out on the department's BICON database.

Choosing a warmth level and two-sided quilts

Treat warmth as its own decision, made alongside the down grade. The right level depends on how warm your bedroom gets through the year and whether you run hot or cold.
